Head of Dam Safety

Are you a forward-thinking leader with a passion for delivering Dam Safety Management programs? We have an exciting opportunity to join Sunwater as Head of Dam Safety, where you’ll play the vital role of leading a team of Engineers and technical professionals that is responsible for expert technical dam safety advice across the full life cycle of our referable assets. You will work collaboratively across all Sunwater business units to continuously improve our approach to Dam Safety and to define and assure the technical and safety requirements for Sunwater’s referable dam and off stream structures and other infrastructure assets located across Queensland.

As Head of Dam Safety at Sunwater, you will:

  • Lead a team of Engineers responsible for providing expert technical dam safety and design services across the full life cycle of the referable assets for all phases of the asset lifecycle.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the delivery of the Dam Safety Management Program, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment with stakeholder expectations. This includes the development and implementation of policies, documentation, training, processes, and practices that support dam safety, as well as contributing to dam safety improvement initiatives.
  • Provide ongoing technical design management support to Project Managers to ensure efficient and effective delivery of project outcomes to time, quality and budget, supporting in the technical assessment of variations and/or scope amendments to ensure studies achieve the outcomes appropriate for the objectives of the project.
  • Hold accountability for, and support Sunwater Dam Safety Technical Decision Maker (DSTDM) and Emergency response teams where required.
  • Lead the management of Sunwater’s Dam Safety compliance obligations in accordance with the regulations, guidelines and Dam Safety Condition Schedules developed by the Dam Safety Regulator. These management requirements include but are not limited to the delivery of EAPs, O&M manuals, dam safety reporting, TRP management, and annual reporting.

We are seeking an exceptional individual with a proven background in the application of ANCOLD Guidelines, 10+ years’ experience in dam safety, design, operation and maintenance, with the capacity to take on leadership responsibilities, along with experience in the civil, structural and geotechnical design of referable dams and an understanding of hydrological and hydraulic design. You will hold tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering or an equivalent qualification and hold RPEQ certification. You will also bring:

  • Technical expertise: Demonstratable experience in providing expert technical advice to senior and executive management on matters relating to dam safety, technical review panels, risk, and large dam regulatory compliance matters.
  • Strategic guidance: Provide technical guidance, review, design management, and governance support on dam safety projects both with respect to the DIP and Compliance Program as required to meet business objectives.
  • Communication skills: Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve organisational objectives.
